1 Dead, 7 Assisted by Red Cross After Late-Night Fire in Carlisle

One person was found dead following a structure fire late Thursday night at the intersection of Lincoln and Factory streets, according to the Carlisle Police Department.

Police and fire crews responded at approximately 11:53 p.m. to a reported fire in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. Upon arrival, crews found flames coming from the second story of a duplex at 229-231 Lincoln Street.

The victim, a woman who was inside a second-floor apartment, has not been publicly identified. Officials confirmed the fatality occurred in one of the second-floor units. One other resident was transported to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

According to a neighboring resident who reported the fire, the woman’s partner exited the apartment yelling “Fire! Fire!” at about 11:50 p.m. The neighbor called 911 and observed that the second-floor apartment appeared fully engulfed by the time he went outside. Officers from the nearby Carlisle Police Department were among the first to arrive and assisted residents from downstairs and the rear of the building.

Carlisle Fire Chief Randy O’Donnell said the fire caused heavy damage to both sides of the duplex, which contained two first-floor and two second-floor apartments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

American Red Cross Central Pennsylvania Chapter volunteers responded Friday to provide assistance following the multi-family home fire. The Red Cross has assisted seven people affected by the fire and is working to help additional residents. Volunteers are providing comfort, care, health services and emotional support, and are coordinating with emergency responders and community partners.

This marks the second fatal fire in Cumberland County in just over a week.
