Maryland Office of the Attorney General Releases IID Annual Report

Maryland Flag

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) has released its third annual report, covering police-involved fatalities and serious incidents from January to December 2024. Established by the Maryland General Assembly in 2021 as part of a comprehensive police reform initiative, the IID investigates all police-involved incidents that result in death or serious injury.

In 2024, the IID saw its highest activity level since inception, initiating 22 investigations. This marks the first full year the division held sole prosecutorial authority, which it exercised for the first time on December 6, 2024. The significant case involved a ten-month investigation of a fatal vehicle collision on December 7, 2023, resulting in the indictment of two Anne Arundel County police officers for misconduct in office. The case is currently pending.

The annual report includes comprehensive case information, statistics, and insights into the IID’s collaborative efforts with the Maryland State Police. It also provides a statistical overview of all cases from the division’s founding on October 1, 2023, through the end of 2024. According to the report, in 2024, 15 cases were closed with decisions not to prosecute. The report details these decisions and the investigative processes.
