Attorneys General Seek More Scrutiny for FBI Nominee Over Firings

A coalition of 20 attorneys general, led by Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, has formally requested the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Chuck Grassley, to reconvene a session for further questioning of Kash Patel, President Trump’s nominee for FBI Director. This move follows reports concerning politically motivated dismissals within the FBI and the creation of a list cataloging agents who investigated the January 6th Capitol riots.

In a letter addressed today, the attorneys general expressed grave concerns over the integrity of law enforcement operations, emphasizing that the enforcement of law should transcend partisan interests. They highlighted recent information suggesting that subsequent to his initial hearing, Patel’s confirmation coincided with the termination of over a dozen high-ranking FBI officials and the inception of a comprehensive list of personnel involved in January 6th investigations.

The letter also pointed to directives from acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove to assemble a detailed list of staff associated with these cases, indicating a potential purge of FBI employees. The attorneys general argue that such actions could severely impact public safety nationwide, undermining efforts to combat significant threats like drug trafficking, terrorism, and financial crimes which have been priorities outlined in recent executive orders by President Trump.

Moreover, the letter criticizes the administration’s broader actions against law enforcement, including the dismissal of U.S. Attorneys, the pardoning of individuals convicted of violence against Capitol police, and proposed funding cuts to law enforcement agencies.

The group of attorneys general, representing states across the country including Arizona, California, Colorado, and New York, among others, are pushing for the Senate to delay any confirmation vote until Patel addresses these critical issues, thereby ensuring a non-partisan commitment to national security and public safety.
