The Floor Trader Outlet of Chambersburg recently addressed questions about dark spots that can appear in oak hardwood floors after sanding and finishing.
According to the store, the spots originate from natural defenses the tree developed during its lifetime to fight off damage or microorganisms. These areas are often difficult to see until a sealer or finish is applied. While sanding typically removes surface blemishes, the underlying spots may not be visible without a process called “water popping” before staining and finishing.
Homeowners may not have noticed these spots in the past because darker stains often masked them. With lighter hardwood stains becoming more popular, the spots are more noticeable.
The Floor Trader Outlet outlined three options for homeowners concerned about this natural occurrence:
- Avoid refinishing oak floors in natural or light stain colors.
- Choose prefinished hardwood flooring, which allows boards with visible spots to be screened or removed, with Mirage Hardwood cited as one option.
- If refinishing with a light color is preferred, ask the refinisher about water popping, though the process is not guaranteed to eliminate all spots.
