Beef producers looking to improve reproductive efficiency and make more informed breeding decisions will have the opportunity to do just that at the upcoming Better Beef Breeding Field Day on June 6, 2026. This hands-on educational event is designed to provide practical, real-world tools that can be immediately applied on-farm to strengthen herd performance.
The field day will take place from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM at Reasy Family Livestock. This on-farm setting allows participants to engage directly with cattle and facilities while learning from Extension educators and industry professionals.
At the core of this program is the goal of improving reproductive success through better decision-making and management. Participants will explore how genetic selection, reproductive technologies, and nutrition all interact to influence breeding outcomes. By understanding how these components work together, producers can make more strategic choices that impact both short-term calf crops and long-term herd productivity.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) will be a key focus of the program. EPDs provide a data-driven way to compare animals and predict how their offspring will perform. Attendees will learn how to interpret and apply EPDs in practical scenarios, helping them select bulls that align with their specific production goals.
The field day will also introduce artificial insemination (AI) systems and how they can be implemented in commercial beef operations. From synchronization protocols to timing and logistics, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how AI can be used to accelerate genetic progress and improve consistency within the herd.
In addition, the program will highlight the critical role of nutrition in reproductive performance. Proper nutritional management before and during the breeding season directly affects conception rates, embryo development, and overall fertility. Understanding these relationships allows producers to better support cows and heifers during key reproductive stages.
This event is open to all beef producers and is offered at no cost to participants, thanks to support from the Pennsylvania Beef Producers Working Group. While there is no registration fee, pre-registration is encouraged to assist with planning.
