No. 1 SHIP U. Field Hockey drops defensive clash at No. 2 Kutztown, 1-0

The Shippensburg University field hockey team lost 1-0 to No. 2 Kutztown in a nonconference matchup Thursday at Andre Reed Stadium.

Shippensburg (3-1) and Kutztown (6-0) were scoreless until two minutes into the second quarter. Kutztown’s Julia Traynor collected a Shippensburg turnover near the circle and sent the ball toward the goal. Ellie Myers controlled it near the cage and scored the game’s only goal.

Kutztown held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners and a 4-2 advantage in shots during the first half. Shippensburg responded with a 5-1 penalty-corner advantage in the second half.

The Raiders had three penalty corners during the final five minutes. On the last attempt with 19 seconds remaining, Kutztown goalkeeper Lorelai Lehenky stopped a long-range shot from Elaina Fragassi.

Lehenky also stopped a fourth-quarter shot from Anne Gardner. Lehenky and Shippensburg goalkeeper Liv Schweighart each made three saves.

Kutztown entered the game with 34 goals through its first five contests. The matchup marked the fifth time in three seasons that Shippensburg and Kutztown met as the top two teams in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II rankings.

Seven of the teams’ last nine meetings have been decided by one goal. All 10 matchups since the start of the 2023 season have been decided by two goals or fewer.

Shippensburg will play at Frostburg State at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
