Pennsylvania Treasury returned more than $61,000 in unclaimed property to residents at a senior fair at VFW Post 92 in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County, Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced.
The event was sponsored by Sen. Joe Pittman, R-41, Rep. Abby Major, R-60, and Rep. Jill Cooper, R-55.
Treasury holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property, including more than $61 million available to Westmoreland County residents. According to the department, more than one in 10 Pennsylvanians has unclaimed property, and the average claim exceeds $1,000.
Unclaimed property includes dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks and physical items such as collectible coins, jewelry and savings bonds. Physical property often comes from safe deposit boxes.
Since Garrity took office in 2021, Treasury has returned more than $1.2 billion in unclaimed property, including a record of more than $334 million last year.
