A Celebration of Local Journalism

A ribbon-cutting at noon today at the 11/30 Visitors Center recognized Vicky Taylor and her lifetime achievements in local journalism. Both the Cumberland Valley Business Alliance and the Franklin County Visitors Bureau provided a lot of support for this event. Afterward, there was a reception in the banquet room of the visitor’s center.

Special Acknowledgements

Many came out to support Vicky Taylor and the continuation the publication of of Franklin County Free Press. Jordan Nace, CVBA Membership Director, congratulated Vicky on all of her years of service. Bob Thomas, former Franklin County County Commissioner praised Vicky’s dedication to local journalism.

“Broadcasting and print have both changed dramatically, but one thing that hasn’t changed is this lady,” he said. “Vicky has always been that source of news people read, local news that matters.”

Mike Ross, Executive Director of the Franklin County Area Development Corp also gave some remarks. “When virtually all news organizations had left Franklin County, it was nice to see this publication launch,” he said.. He talked about the period several years ago when coverage local events and news that had been lost.

He talked about the importance of local journalism; and he congratulated and thanked Nathan Neil for stepping up to the plate to keep the publication moving forward.

Janet Pollard, Executive Director of the Franklin County Visitors Bureau also expressed her gratitude for the work Vicky has put in over the years to get the word out about what is happening in Franklin County. “It’s so good to see a family giving it to a family for the community,” she said. “That’s really what Franklin County is about.”

Honoring Vicky

Nathan Neil then shared a story about the first time he met Vicky at the Franklin County Science Fair in 2008. She was the journalist that wrote a story about his High School and their projects and he expressed that he felt that he was being interviewed by the biggest celebrity in the world. He explained how that encounter had a profound impact on him and presented Vicky with an original copy of that publication. You could feel the emotion as he talked about Vicky, their relationship, and how much he values her for her journalism and friendship.

Neil expressed that he is taking this on as a service and duty that he feels to the community. Aaron Dobler was introduced as the new Editor for the Franklin County Free Press as well during his remarks.

Vicky was then presented with a framed certificate, honoring her for her lifetime of dedication to journalism and this community. Neil said, “This is small compared to the actual impact you had on this community” as he presented the honor.
