Shippensburg University sports: A home sweep for Ship Raiders

The Shippensburg University baseball team opened its four-game series with Kutztown on Thursday with a home sweep, defeating the Golden Bears by scores of 9-5 and 9-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action on a sunny, 70-degree day at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (11-7, 9-5 PSAC East) cranked out 24 hits, including nine doubles. The Raiders used a six-run fifth inning in Game 1 to turn a tie game into a 9-3 lead, and then used a seven-run second inning in Game 2 to take control of the nightcap.

Graduate JuJu Cason (East Arcadia, N.C./North Brunswick (Belmont Abbey)) had a team-high four hits, totaling three RBIs. He also stole two bases and scored two runs.

Both Chase Zurawski (Reading, Pa./Wilson) and Lake Lloyd (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) finished the doubleheader with two doubles, three total hits, and three RBIs. Graduate Jordan Yoder (Ronks, Pa./Conestoga Valley (Cecil College/Liberty)) added three hits and two RBIs.

Kiernan Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon- St. Jude (Coastal Carolina)) threw five shutout innings in Game 2 for the win in the nightcap. Higgins allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out seven.

Graduate Kyle Lysy (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) got the Game 1 win, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings. Lysy walked two and struck out four.

Austen Labarre (Nazareth, Pa./Pen Argyl), Jackson LoBianco (Irvine, Cal./University) and Chris Horstdoubles, (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) all threw a scoreless 1-2-3 inning out of the bullpen. Labarre and Horst each struck out two.

The Raiders travel to No. 29 Millersville Tuesday for another doubleheader at Cooper Park, beginning at 1 p.m.
