CHAMBERSBURG (Oct. 2, 2019) — The community will get the chance to walk through history this weekend during a Salute to African-American Heritage Weekend.

Area residents interested in learning more about the African-American community’s contribution to the county’s history can join the Walk Through History from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday. A free festival focusing on that history takes place Sunday afternoon at the Franklin County Visitors Center.

Learn the history of South End Chambersburg and tour St. James, John Wesley and Mt. Moriah AME Churches, Mike Waters Park and the Kerrstown neighborhood Saturday.

Meet at St. James AME Church, 510 South Main Street in Chambersburg to begin the tour. Park in the South Street parking lot between Main & Second Streets or at SCCAP on South Main Street.

At noon, have lunch 12 pm at St. James. Bring your own lunch or place a hoagie order ($8) Saturday morning.

Sunday’s festival from 2 – 4 p.m. will include storytelling, gospel dancers, step dancers, music, mask making and more.

The storytelling event will focus on Joseph Winters, an important figure of local, black history. The inventor and abolitionist is credited with creating and patenting several fire-related inventions in the late 19th Century, including a fire escape ladder that was the forerunner of todays ladder trucks.

The Franklin County citizen lived a productive and diverse life. He worked as a machinist at the Cumberland Valley Railroad in Chambersburg. He is also credited with introducing John Brown and Frederick Douglass.
