AI-Supported Imaging Helps Detect Blood Clot During Cancer Treatment

Carolyn Thomas, 82, recently completed her second round of cancer treatment through WellSpan Health.

Thomas underwent surgery and chemotherapy about four years ago. After a recent routine visit and biopsy, she had another surgery in March followed by six chemotherapy treatments. She completed her final treatment during the summer of 2026.

During her ongoing care, Thomas received a CT scan at WellSpan Imaging in Hanover. The scan showed a pulmonary embolism, or blood clot in the lung. Her care team contacted her shortly after the scan and directed her to WellSpan York Hospital for treatment.

WellSpan’s Aidoc artificial intelligence technology flagged the scan for priority review. A radiologist then confirmed the finding, allowing Thomas’ care team to respond quickly. Her results were available through the MyWellSpan patient portal by that evening, and she received medication to treat the condition.

WellSpan has used Aidoc since 2023 to help radiologists identify suspected abnormalities and prioritize scans for review. The technology assesses imaging for more than 25 conditions, including pulmonary embolisms, aortic aneurysms, brain aneurysms and strokes.

According to WellSpan, Aidoc has analyzed 1.7 million scans and helped prioritize cases involving more than 6,000 patients. Turnaround times for critical outpatient imaging cases have decreased from about 25 hours to slightly more than two hours.

Thomas receives care at WellSpan facilities in York and Hanover. She has completed her sixth and final chemotherapy treatment and plans to spend time with her husband, two daughters and other family members.
