Alvey E. Carbaugh 1954-2026

Mr. Alvey E. Carbaugh, 72, of Greencastle, PA, passed away early Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at UPMC Harrisburg, surrounded by his loved ones.

Alvey E. Carbaugh
Alvey E. Carbaugh

Born March 23, 1954, in McConnellsburg, PA, he was the son of the late William and Florence (Rhodes) Carbaugh. He attended McConnellsburg High School.

He and his wife, Betty L. (Mowen) Carbaugh, were married on February 24, 1975, in Hagerstown, MD. Together, they shared more than 51 years of marriage, raising their family and making countless memories along the way.

Alvey worked as an assembler and welder for Jerr-Dan and JLG and retired after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Mercersburg Sportsman’s Association.

An antique car enthusiast, Alvey took great pride in his green 1969 Camaro, which he lovingly restored himself. He enjoyed attending car shows and displaying the results of his hard work. Whether he was at a show, out with Betty, or simply going about his day, he seemed to run into someone he knew—from work, from the car shows, or somewhere along the way. In retirement, he especially enjoyed gathering with his buddies at the Family Style Restaurant in Greencastle.

Patience may not have been Alvey’s strongest suit, but his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew just how to soften him up. They could talk him into almost anything, and he adored every one of them. Whether they called him Pap, Pappy, Pap-Paw, or another variation, each name meant the same thing: a grandfather they dearly loved.

Family trips to the beach brought another favorite pastime…searching for shark teeth. Alvey enjoyed the hunt, although finding them was sometimes another matter. A grandchild might pick up a tooth right in front of him and announce, “Here it is!” His response, “How do you do that?” became part of the fun. Those simple moments, filled with laughter and time together, will remain treasured family memories.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Heather Tosten (Shane) of Greencastle, PA, and Jamie Carbaugh (Christa) of Chambersburg, PA; five grandchildren, Jordyn Eberhardt “Pooh-g” (Joe), Rylee Tosten “Roo”, Brady Tosten, Delaney Carbaugh, and Xander Carbaugh; three great-grandchildren, Ava Eberhardt, Bryar Eberhardt, and Eden Eberhardt; and many nieces and nephews.

The last surviving member of his immediate family, Alvey was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edgar H. Carbaugh, George Carbaugh, and Herman Carbaugh; and four sisters, Beulah Mellott, Dolly Jean Diffenderfer, Virginia Gordon, and Zelda Wible.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, PA.

In celebration of Alvey’s love of classic cars, his fellow car enthusiasts are encouraged to drive their own classic cars to the viewing—a fitting tribute to a man who took such pride in his Camaro and the friendships that came with it.

Online condolences may be expressed at the funeral home’s website.
