Attorney General Sunday Joins Call for Stronger Child Protections in A.I. Platforms

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced his office has joined a bipartisan coalition of 44 Attorneys General urging major technology companies to strengthen protections for children using artificial intelligence (A.I.) chatbots.

The letter was sent to Apple, Meta, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Replika, and other companies. It warns that harmful chatbot interactions involving children must be addressed.

The Attorneys General cited examples of problematic chatbot interactions, including sexualized conversations, discussions of violence, and scams. The letter states that companies are aware their technology may expose children to sexualized content and that if such conduct were carried out by humans, it would be unlawful or criminal.

The letter calls on companies to review their policies, highlighting a case where Meta approved a policy allowing its A.I. to engage in sexualized conversations with minors.

Sunday said children in Pennsylvania and across the country are at risk of being harmed by unregulated chatbot technology.

The coalition includes Attorneys General from Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawai’i, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
