Attorney General Warns of PayPal Cyber Scam in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has issued a warning about a new cyber scam targeting users of PayPal. The scam involves fraudulent invoices being sent to emails, urging the recipients to make urgent payments. These fake requests often include a toll-free number encouraging recipients to call back, which leads directly to the scammer’s line aimed at extracting personal information.

Sunday noted the increasing sophistication of cyber scams and stressed the importance of vigilance. “Scammers are exploiting the trust that Pennsylvanians have in PayPal as a common tool for personal and small business transactions,” he said. The state’s Bureau of Consumer Protection is ready to assist those affected.

To protect themselves, consumers should verify the sender’s email address, ensuring it matches the official “service@paypal.com” address. Additionally, recipients are advised to scrutinize the nature of any payment request. If the request is unrecognizable, it should be disregarded.

Victims of suspicious PayPal invoices are encouraged to contact PayPal customer service directly and can also file a complaint with the Office of Attorney General. Sharing information about these frauds is crucial in preventing further victims.
