Car Break-Ins on the Rise: Local Case Highlights Need for Vigilance

Car break-ins, often referred to as “smash and grab” thefts, are increasing in parking lots across the region. In these crimes, thieves break vehicle windows and steal valuables left inside, leading to financial loss, identity theft, and inconvenience for victims.

Patriot Federal Credit Union recently assisted in preventing fraud linked to a smash-and-grab incident. Two individuals were apprehended by local police after attempting to cash large stolen checks using a victim’s stolen identity.

What Is a “Smash and Grab”?

A “smash and grab” occurs when thieves break into vehicles—usually by shattering windows—to steal items such as purses, wallets, checkbooks, Social Security cards, membership cards, and driver’s licenses. These thefts frequently occur near gyms, sporting events, playgrounds, community festivals, and shopping centers, where people may leave personal belongings in their vehicles.

Once stolen, identification and financial documents are often used to commit fraud, including attempts to cash forged checks or withdraw money under a victim’s name.

How to Protect Yourself

Law enforcement and financial institutions recommend the following precautions:

  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle. Lock important items in your trunk before arriving at your destination.
  • Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas. Choose spaces near entrances, under lights, or in monitored lots.
  • Lock your doors and roll up your windows. While not foolproof, this makes vehicles less attractive to thieves.
  • Stay alert in parking areas. Report suspicious activity to security or police.

If your personal items are stolen, report the theft immediately to your financial institution, file a police report, and monitor your accounts for unauthorized activity.

Patriot Federal Credit Union advises members to contact the credit union right away if their personal information or bank materials are stolen so account alerts can be placed to prevent fraudulent use.

Preventing Future Incidents

Smash-and-grab thefts can happen anywhere. Staying alert, securing valuables, and acting quickly in the event of theft can help minimize losses and protect financial security.
