Carl’s Drug Store Marks 200 Years in Greencastle

Carl’s Drug Store in Greencastle celebrated its 200th anniversary on Friday, recognized as the oldest continuously operating independent pharmacy in the United States.

Founded on April 2, 1825, Carl’s Drug Store was operated by the Carl family until 1974. The pharmacy has been at its current location since 1999.

The anniversary event drew more than 100 attendees, including lifelong customers, local leaders, and former and current owners. The celebration included commendations and free ice cream for the community.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano noted the pharmacy’s longevity through historic events, including the Civil War, the Great Depression, and both World Wars.

Current owner Wayne Myers said maintaining operations is challenging due to underpayment from pharmacy benefit managers and predicted closures of many community pharmacies by 2030.

Former owner Rodney Savage highlighted the store’s longstanding relationships with customers as a key part of its history.
