Carolyn S “Ky” Tosten 1931~2021
Mrs. Carolyn S “Ky” Tosten (Smith), 89, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, in her home.
Born Carolyn Marie Smith on July 23, 1931 in Gettysburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Scott L. and Minerva G. (Hartman) Smith.
She was nicknamed “Ky” by a Gettysburg professor who was her neighbor. She lived in the Gettysburg and Newport, PA areas prior to moving to Waynesboro in the 8th grade.
Ky graduated from Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1949. She later graduated from Hagerstown Medical Secretarial School.
She and her husband, the late John E. “Merf” Tosten, Jr., were married on March 1, 1952. Mr. Tosten died on July 21, 2007.
While Merf was in the Navy and stationed in California, Ky worked in a hospital in Pomona. Prior to the birth of her first child, Mike, Ky and Merf returned to Waynesboro and she was employed in the business office of the Waynesboro Hospital for over 30 years.
Ky enjoyed bird watching, reading, and doing word searches puzzles. Through the years she liked playing cards, going to lunch with her special friends “The Golden Girls”, vacationing in Ocean City, MD, trips to the Masters and to Aiken, SC, and she was an avid fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her furry companion, Motley.
She is survived by three children, Michael Tosten of Aiken, SC, Sally Borzager and her husband John “Rusty” of Selbyville, DE and SueAnn McKendrick and her husband Eric of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Jeremiah Tosten of Coburn, PA, Julie Metz of Chambersburg, and John Borzager of Chambersburg; one sister, Susan Erb and her husband, Greg of Hanover, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, J. Scott Tosten and her step-mother, Wilma G. Smith.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2021 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Dave Besecker officiating.
Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
There will be no public viewing, however the family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Tuesday afternoon, in the funeral home.
