Many in the community are happy this week to be celebrating nurses and the work they do. They do that by making cloth masks and donating them for distribution by organizations like WellSpan Health. They send food to local hospitals for the nursing staff. And they celebrate National Nurses week.
Celebrating nurses is what WellSpan Health does not only during National Nurses Week but every day of the year. This year the event takes on more importance as dedicated nurses care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For this reason the American Nurses Association has extended National Nurses Week. It has become National Nurses Month. 2020 is also the Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
“This year, Nurses Week is more special than ever,” said WellSpan’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Kris O’Shea.
Local nurses, she said, make a difference in the lives of patients and their families during one of the scariest times in recent history.
As a result of the strength, resilience, and care provided by local nurses, they deserve recognition for the important work they do.
“We celebrate all of the hard work our nurses have given,” she said. “Not only in the past few weeks, but everyday throughout our system.”
