Chambersburg Tennis Duo Takes District Silver, Advances to States

by egotwals

Chambersburg seniors Leah Wadel and Charley Kalathas finished second in the District 3 Class 3A girls tennis doubles tournament at Hershey Racquet Club, earning a PIAA Championships berth.

They opened with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dallastown’s Saisha Jindal and Katie Schiavone, then upset top-seeded Emily Tippin and Lucy Lamparella of Wilson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. In Saturday’s semifinals, they defeated fourth-seeded Abby Martin and Leighanne Chiong of Manheim Township, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Central Dauphin’s Emma Teunissen and Katie Gergal won the final, 6-3, 6-1. The same pair had beaten Chambersburg in its opening Mid Penn tournament match.

Coach Niko Mucci credited Wadel’s net play and Kalathas’ baseline returns. “They just went on an unbelieveable run,” he said, highlighting their development since freshman year despite the program lacking feeder teams and nearby indoor courts.

Wadel and Kalathas will face District 2 champions Amishi Amit and Sammy Rosenstein of Abington Heights at Hershey Racquet Club on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
