CHAMBERSBURG — Franklin County’s new courthouse project is moving along on schedule and within budget.

Commissioners got 18 bids from area contractors for various work including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, elevator, and general construction. Bids were opened on Tuesday morning.

Three of the contractors are local to Franklin County.

“We’re pleased that the submitted bids are within our anticipated budget,” said Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.

“Contractors will be thoroughly vetted before bids are awarded, but we are cautiously optimistic that bids will stay well within our budget range.”

The County is required to contract with the lowest responsible bidder. The total amount of the lowest combined base bids is approximately $35 million.

Construction of the Judicial Center is estimated to begin this September. Renovations to the historic Old Courthouse and Courthouse Annex will follow.

Commissioners say that once complete, the Courthouse Campus will provide increased safety and security to visitors and employees.

It will also provide space to meet the demands of a growing county, they say.
