Crash takes life of 84-year-old

A fatal crash in Hamilton Township claimed the life of an 84-year-old Chambersburg man Wednesday afternoon.

Franklin County Coroner Jeff Conner pronounced Bruce R. Morton dead at the scene of the 3:27 p.m. crash at the intersection of North Franklin and West Commerce Streets, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Morton’s west bound Ford Explorer when he turned left into the path of a north bound cement truck driven by Noel L. Flora, 54, Waynesboro. The truck hit the SUV broadside at its 9 o’clock position, according to police and first responders at the scene. Franklin Fire Company’s social media described it as a T-Bone collision.

Morton, westbound on West Commerce, failed to stop/yield at the intersection, according to the police report. He was alone in the SUV, police said.

Flora was not injured in the crash. Police list no traffic violations for him in the report. Both drivers wore seat and lap belts. The SUV came to rest on the southbound shoulder of Franklin Street. The cement truck came to rest on the road’s northbound shoulder.

First responders from Franklin Fire Company assisted police at the crash scene. Franklin County Fire Police closed Franklin and Commerce Streets for several hours.
