David was born in Waynesboro on April 12, 1959 to Gladys and the late Lester “Pee Wee” Beltz. He graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School in 1977, where he competed in football and wrestling.
David worked various jobs upon completion of high school until he retired. He married the love of his life, Sherry (Bowman) of Smithsburg, Maryland, on May 30, 1981. His family recalls that he often wrote poems to his wife.
David was intensely involved in the life of his family through church and recreational activities. When his children were in high school, David was the president of the band auxiliary, coached softball, t-ball, and was involved in boy scouts. He devoted his time at Otterbein Church with Sunday School, youth ministry, the men’s ministry, and his passion of service through mowing.
He was also an enthusiastic sports fan, especially throwing his support behind professional sports teams the Miami Dolphins in football, the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball, and the Milwaukee Bucks in basketball.
David was also passionate about NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt. He loved traveling, especially to the beach, and was known for taking “short cuts.” David loved his cats and was known for having a “sweet tooth.”
David was also a history buff, boasting a collection of Civil War books; he enjoyed traveling to the Gettysburg Civil War battlefields, and he belonged to a Civil War Roundtable in Chambersburg, often accompanied by Brianna Downie (granddaughter). David also enjoyed playing video games on his computer.
David was looking forward to adding more grandchildren as Amber and Matthew are adopting a girl later this year.
David is preceded in death by his father, Lester “Pee Wee” Beltz.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry; daughter Amber Gossert (and her husband Matthew Gossert, both of Jacksonville, Fl), and sons Ryan (fiancée Krissy Downie and their two children, Brianna and Gunnar); and Austin; sister Darla; brothers Daryl, Donnie and Danny; and numerous nephews and nieces.
