Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 2. The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal is reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms when turning clocks back.
Working smoke and CO alarms can double a person’s chances of surviving a home fire or CO emergency. The office advises replacing alarms that use 9-volt batteries or are more than 10 years old with 10-year sealed lithium battery models.
Since the relaunch of the Get Alarmed Maryland program in May 2025, nearly 350 smoke alarms and 63 CO detectors have been installed in homes across the state.
Residents are also encouraged to “Close Before You Doze” by keeping bedroom doors shut while sleeping, which can block smoke and heat in the event of a fire.
