The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is recognizing Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, coinciding with the end of daylight saving time. The shift in time can lead to less sleep and darker commutes, increasing the risk of drowsy driving.
PennDOT advises drivers to take the following steps to stay alert behind the wheel:
- Get 7–9 hours of sleep to maintain proper alertness.
- Avoid alcohol and sedating medications, and check labels or consult a doctor if needed.
- Travel with a companion to help you stay alert during drives.
- Take regular breaks, stopping every 100 miles or every two hours during long trips.
