July 2022: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Hosting Shark Week

Shark Week is an annual, week-long TV programming block on the Discovery Channel, which features shark-based programming. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will host this year and has the honor of being the first-ever Master of Ceremonies. “Our Seven Bucks Productions has partnered with Discovery to bring you a very special (and badass) Shark Week.

Shark Week History

Shark Week originally premiered on July 17, 1988. Featured annually, in July or early August. It was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks. Over time, it grew in popularity and became a hit on the Discovery Channel. Since 2010, it has been the longest-running cable television programming event in history. It is broadcasted in over 72 countries.

Where Can I Watch It

Shark Week is promoted heavily via social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Episodes are also available for purchase on services like Google Play Movies & TV/YouTube, Amazon Video, and iTunes. Some episodes are free on subscription-based Hulu and Discovery.

Shweekend (Shark-Themed Weekend)

In early 2015, Discovery announced a new, shark-themed weekend that would air on the Discovery Channel. The weekend took place in late August 2015 and contained three different programs. The first program, which aired on Saturday, August 29, was MythBusters vs. Jaws, followed right after by Shark Alley: Legend of Dynamite. The next day, Sunday, August 30, one program aired, called Air Jaws: Walking with Great Whites. The purpose of Shweekend was to increase the shark-related content from previous years and to prolong the summer’s shark coverage.

Shark Week Hosts

Discovery Channel’s upcoming “Shark Week” will have some extra muscle, This year Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will host, and has the honor of being the first-ever Master of Ceremonies. The Rock wrote on Instagram, “Our Seven Bucks Productions has partnered with Discovery to bring you a very special (and badass) Shark Week. I filmed exclusively in my home state of Hawaii, these beautiful predators, Aumakua (Gods), are deeply revered and respected in our Polynesian culture,”

Tracy Morgan will also make an appearance, along with the cast of “Jackass.” Previous hosts of Shark week are names like Peter Benchley, Andy Samberg, Eli Roth, Shaq, and Rob Riggle Jr.

Shark Week Line Up

July 15th “Dawn of the Monster Mako”

A 14-foot giant mako shark is spotted in the waters off the Azores. Underwater cinematographer Joe Romeiro tries to capture it on film.

July 23rd, “Great White Intersection”

Follow the resurgence of great white sharks off the beaches of Cape Cod.

July 24th, “Return to Headstone Hell”

Norfolk Island’s tiger sharks go head-to-head with migrating great whites over cow carcasses.

July 24th, “Jackass Shark Week 2.0”

Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Jasper, Dark Shark and Zach Holmes return for a second year to help a friend over his fear of sharks.
