College basketball: Eagles defeat Wilson’s Phoenix

The Eastern University Eagles defeated Wilson’s Phoenix men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match up. The Phoenix (0-3, 0-0 CSAC) and the Eagles (4-2, 0-0 MAC) battled it out on the court but the Eagles won the game with a final score of 89-60.

How It Happened

Eastern started the game with high intensity throughout the first half and got off to an early 6-0 lead. The Phoenix fought their way back to within two points and tied the game at 8 off a dunk from junior Antonio Bussey (Aiken, SC, Claflin Univ.). 

Wilson’s defense held strong keeping the game within one point for a good two minutes before the Eagles broke through and expanded their lead throughout the half despite the efforts by the Phoenix.

Eastern went into halftime up 16 over Wilson with a score of 41-25. After gaining the lead in the first half, the Eastern University Eagles never looked back, continuing to grow their lead. Despite the offensive efforts by the Phoenix, the Eagles continued their offensive fire to bring the game to its final 89-60. 

Inside the Box Score 

Turnovers were a big factor in the game, with Eastern scoring 43 points off of turnovers. Junior Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) led the team in scoring followed by sophomore Khalif Dickson (Hampton, VA, Eastern Univ.).  Dickson and Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA., Mills E. Godwin) led the team in rebounds each earning five apiece.
