Educational opportunities, shopping and the availability of seasonal plants will come together Saturday, April 23, for the Earth Day celebration in Chambersburg. Environmental protection and sustainability will be highlighted during the event hosted by Downtown Chambersburg Inc. in partnership with Chambersburg Waste Paper and Downtown Business Council of Chambersburg.
“The 30 vendors signed up for this celebration are truly top notch. I’m so impressed by what I’ve seen and heard from them to date, and I so look forward to that Saturday when they are all linked to honor our planet,” said Sam Thrush, president of Downtown Chambersburg Inc.

What to Expect
Craig Adams, operations manager for Chambersburg Waste Paper, hopes to use the day to promote awareness and education about recycling. He plans to help guests get clarification about recycling procedures. “There is a lot of mass confusion about what goes in and what does not go in,” he said.
Coyle Free Library is planning for a chalk art contest (weather permitting) and an art studio for children ages 12 and younger. It will be playing a nature film on a loop throughout the day. The library encourages everyone to participate in an “Earth Day pledge” community art project.
Additionally, the library’s bookmobile will be on Memorial Square with information to sign up for library cards and giveaways, according to Jill Ann Yaich, senior director of information services.
Like-minded People
Franklin County native Lisa Poole finds herself increasingly concerned with humans’ impact on Earth. She looks forward to connecting with likeminded people during the Chambersburg event, where she will sell apparel through her business, Grateful Dyeworks. “I’m doing a slew of new shirts in earth tones to go with the day,” she said.
