Ed and his wife, Solvig were married in her hometown of Linkoping, Sweden in 1964 and lived there for two years. He worked for SAAB Automotive during this time and started their family with their oldest daughter, Monica. He enjoyed precious time with the Rylanders, who welcomed him into their family upon his marriage to Solvig.

Ed and Solvig returned to Oakville in 1966 and had their daughter, Denise and son, Brent. After starting a family, Ed was very involved with the school district. He installed a playground at Jacksonville Elementary School, worked on starting a soccer program for Big Spring School District, and installed a nature trail at Big Spring Middle School.

He also helped coach the soccer teams for his son and granddaughter and he enjoyed endless fishing trips and hunting trips with his son, nephews, and grandchildren. He was always up for a game of tennis or 500, a bike ride, or a gallop on his special horse, Dakota.

He was active in the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) and the Cumberland County Democratic Party. He strongly believed in their motto that change only occurs if you put your heart and effort into it.

Ed worked for AMP for the rest of his career. Upon retirement, he and Solvig traveled to Ireland and Sweden, and spent most of the rest of their time enjoying and helping with their children and grandchildren.

In 2015, Ed and his very patient wife moved to their beloved “Stugan” or cabin, which he built from wood that he reclaimed from an old store in Oakville.

Ed loved all and was loved by all, but none more than his wife, Solvig. They shared a beautiful love story and adventurous tales that were not only legendary, but admired by many.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Solvig A. (Rylander) Hanlin of Newport; two daughters, Monica Hanlin (Lloyd Thomas) of Newville and Denise (Kelly) Jumper of Carlisle; one son, Brent (Kim) Hanlin of Carlisle; he was the proudest Grandad to his three grandchildren, Travis Jumper, Madeleine and Eva Hanlin; as well as a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Gary (Doc) Hanlin and Pete Hanlin; and three sisters, Patricia Lightfoot, Bobbie McBeth, and Carol Shaffer.

Professional services are entrusted to Dugan Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Shippensburg.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 6 at Fallen Tree Farm, 1634 Holly Pike, Carlisle.
