FCMC STATE OF THE COMPANY

The Fulton County Medical Center (FCMC) Board of Directors assembled for its Annual Public State of the Company meeting on Monday, November 18. During this meeting, Mike Makosky, President and CEO of FCMC, presented a comprehensive overview of the organization’s operational performance, employment highlights, educational initiatives, and future improvements.

Mr. Makosky characterized the operational highlights as “stabilized,” coinciding with the conclusion of the Covid-19 pandemic.  “Nevertheless, it is essential for long-term care (LTC) facilities to continue implementing Covid precautionary procedures, including masking and other mitigation measures in instances of exposure among residents or employees. Staffing conditions have improved, resulting in a reduced dependence on contract labor. Furthermore, introducing new primary care providers has positively impacted both patient visits to the clinic and outpatient services.

Although FCMC reported an operational loss in FY2024, the decline was noticeably less severe than the previous fiscal year. A report from the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania indicates that hospitals nationwide are experiencing significant financial strain, with expenses projected to be as much as 25% higher than those before the pandemic. FCMC’s reported loss of $1.6 million is a reduction compared to the previous year. Notably, patient volumes are increasing in primary care, specialty services, and outpatient testing and procedures.” Mr. Makosky stated, “We are growing.  We have made significant progress in our financial recovery, improved financial reporting, fostered active engagement of department leaders in financial management, and enhanced our billing and collection processes.

The outlook for FY2025 is to continue improving patient volumes, along with collection and billing processes.  We are working to maintain an inpatient census of at least ten and growing the LTC census. The organization has expanded primary care and specialty clinics, which is leading to growth in outpatient volumes, including imaging, laboratory services, surgical procedures, rehabilitation, and wound care. ”

For the eighth consecutive year, the FCMC Foundation has raised over $500,000, culminating in a total of $571,990. Moreover, the Foundation has allocated over $692,590 to the Medical Center to support various programs, services, and equipment needs, with the most substantial project being the renovation of the long-term care facility, which received $339,521. Nine other departments benefited from funding for essential equipment and service needs.

Mr. Mike Straley, Executive Director of the FCMC Foundation, remarked, “The Long-Term Care renovation project has achieved remarkable success, evident in the satisfaction reflected in the residents’ smiles. We are profoundly grateful for the community’s financial generosity, without which none of this would be possible.”

The FCMC Board of Directors for 2025 will consist of the following members: Rodney Walters (Chair), Mark Recard (Vice Chair), Dave McDonald (Treasurer), Deb Toothman (Secretary), Dr. Doug Stern (Chief of Staff), Dr. Frank D’Amelio, Preston Spahr, Tina Gress, Sandy Crouse, Kevin Beem, Penny Shives, Genevieve Harper (effective January 1, 2025), and Jim Miller (effective November 1, 2025). The Community Committee will include Kate Carbaugh (effective January 1, 2025), Mindy Horne, Erin Pisnter, Paul Schemel, and Dr. Jeff Mandak.  Mr. Makosky thanked Scott Alexander, who is completing his 3rd – 3-year term as a member of the Board, serving as Board Chair for the last 3 years.   “Scott has been a very engaged Board member, dedicated to maintaining the Medical Center’s solvency and a staunch supporter of our Mission.  Thank you for the many hours you have given to FCMC over the years.”

The 2025 FCMC Foundation Board Members will be as follows: Jeramy Culler (Chair), Denny Buterbaugh (Vice Chair), Bridgit Martin (Secretary/Treasurer), along with John Kilduff, Loy Garber, Barbara Danowski, Virginia Palmer, Jerry Spessard, David Washabaugh IV, and commencing in January 2025, Nicole Wilson and Patti Martin. The non-voting community members will include Helen Overly, Bill Hine, and Andy Washabaugh.

The FCMC Foundation has scheduled its 10th Annual Bluegrass & BBQ event for Friday, April 25, at 5 p.m. at Stone Hollow Farm, featuring the distinguished bluegrass band VOLUME 5 as special musical guests from North Carolina.
