FDA Issues Warning About Contaminated Sacred Tattoo Ink Products

Date Issued: May 7, 2025
Agency: U.S. Food and Drug Administration

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers, tattoo artists, and retailers to avoid using or selling two specific Sacred Tattoo Ink products found to be contaminated with harmful bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The affected products are:

  • Sacred Tattoo Ink, Raven Black; CI# 77266; Lot#: RB0624; Best Before: June 28, 2027
  • Sacred Tattoo Ink, Sunny Daze; CI# 21095; Lot#: SD1124; Best Before: November 1, 2027

FDA testing found these inks contain pathogenic microorganisms that can cause infections when injected into the skin. Reported symptoms of contaminated tattoo ink include rashes or red papules at the tattoo site, with some cases resulting in permanent scarring.

The contamination was discovered during routine FDA surveillance and microbiological testing of tattoo ink products. The inks were analyzed using FDA’s standard cosmetic testing methods.

Consumers are advised to verify the inks being used before getting a tattoo. Tattoo artists and retailers should discontinue use and sale of the affected products.

The FDA continues to monitor the situation and encourages healthcare professionals and consumers to report adverse reactions via FDA’s SmartHub.
