Fire Rages Through Franklin County Row Home, Injures Two Firefighters

A major fire engulfed a row home on Philadelphia Avenue near South Potomac Street in Waynesboro, Franklin County, on Sunday morning, causing significant damage and injuring two firefighters.

The Waynesboro Fire Department was initially called to the scene at 10:52 a.m. The situation quickly escalated, leading to the fire being upgraded to a second alarm. Low water pressure posed an early challenge in combating the blaze, prompting firefighters to establish a relay system to enhance the water supply, according to Chief Chris Devers.

Engine 7-1 from a neighboring fire department was transferred to Waynesboro to provide additional manpower. After being on standby for over an hour, the crew was specially requested at the scene to assist with overhaul operations. They worked at the location for two hours before being released by Command 24.

Firefighting teams from multiple counties, including some from Maryland, joined forces and managed to contain the fire within an hour. However, the flames destroyed six apartment units before being subdued.

The injured firefighters’ current conditions have not been disclosed. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
