The Franklin County Commissioners presented a citation to former commissioner and World War II veteran Sam Worley in recognition of his 104th birthday.

Worley was born on June 13, 1921, on his family’s farm near Fannettsburg and has been a lifelong resident of Franklin County. He served as an Air Force intelligence officer during World War II, with tours in England and Germany.

He attended Shippensburg State University, Bucknell University, and later graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in banking. Worley worked in various roles at Valley Bank and Trust Company.

Worley served eight years as a Franklin County Commissioner and was also a Chambersburg Borough Councilperson, including time as Council President. He briefly served as Mayor of Chambersburg in the early 2000s.

His community involvement includes work with the YMCA, Franklin County Conservation District, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Occupational Services, Inc., Scotland School for Veterans Children, United Way, American Cancer Society, and the Franklin County Republican Party. He was also an original trustee of the Pennsylvania Local Government Investment Trust (PLGIT), established in 1981.

Worley has received several awards, including Citizen of the Year in 1980, the Lifetime Service Award from the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, and the Friend of Local Government Award from the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.

The Commissioners thanked Worley for his years of public service and wished him continued good health.
