On Wednesday evening, the Franklin County Commissioners presented a citation to former commissioner and World War II veteran Sam Worley in recognition of his 104th birthday.
Worley was born on June 13, 1921, on his family’s farm near Fannettsburg and has lived in Franklin County his entire life. He served as an Air Force intelligence officer during World War II, with tours in England and Germany.
He attended Shippensburg State University and Bucknell University before graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in banking. He later worked in various roles at Valley Bank and Trust Company.
Worley served eight years as a Franklin County Commissioner and held multiple positions in municipal government, including Chambersburg Borough Council President and a brief term as Mayor in the early 2000s.
His community involvement has included work with organizations such as the YMCA, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Franklin County Conservation District, United Way, American Cancer Society, and the Franklin County Republican Party. He was also an original trustee of the Pennsylvania Local Government Investment Trust (PLGIT), established in 1981.
Worley has received several honors, including the 1980 Citizen of the Year award, the Lifetime Service Award from the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, and the Friend of Local Government Award from the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.
The commissioners expressed appreciation for Worley’s service and wished him continued good health.
