The National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) has selected the County of Franklin, Pennsylvania, as the host institution for the 2026 NAGARA Internship Program.
The 2026 selection followed the largest call for host institutions in the program’s history, with 10 applications submitted nationwide. After review by the NAGARA Internship Subcommittee, Franklin County was chosen from the competitive applicant pool.
Launched in 2020, the NAGARA Internship Program provides paid, hands-on experience for students and emerging professionals pursuing careers in government archives and records management. Since its inception, the program has awarded $11,500 in paid internship funding to five student interns.
The 2026 intern will work with Franklin County’s Archives and Records Management staff on processing and describing historically significant county records. Responsibilities will include working with large-format tax maps and aerial photographs; researching their creation and use in county government; developing organizational tools to improve access; and creating descriptive metadata and public-facing finding aids. The internship will also involve assisting with digitization efforts, public outreach activities, and documentation to improve public access to records.
In addition to project work, the intern will receive mentorship, participate in shadowing opportunities, and gain exposure to records preservation, access, and public service functions within a county archives and records management program. The internship is structured to support professional skill development and produce a discrete body of work suitable for a professional portfolio.
NAGARA thanked all institutions that applied to host the 2026 Internship Program.
