The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam calls circulating in the county.
According to the office, scammers often use fear and urgency to obtain money or personal information. Common schemes include callers claiming a person has a bench warrant, missed jury duty, owes a court fine or must comply with Megan’s Law requirements.
Other scams involve requests for gift cards or donations from callers claiming to represent law enforcement or a charity. Companies may also offer to recover surplus funds from a sheriff’s sale for a fee, although residents do not need a third party to claim those funds.
The Sheriff’s Office said it will not demand payment over the phone or request gift cards, cryptocurrency or payment applications. Residents should also be aware that caller identification numbers can be falsified.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and avoid sending money or sharing personal information. Suspicious calls should be reported to local law enforcement.
People who believe they have been scammed should immediately contact their financial institution and law enforcement.
