Two college students pursuing careers in health care recently shadowed retired cardiologist Dr. Edward Collier at WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital.
Ariel, a junior at Penn State studying to become a physician assistant, and Ava, a Liberty University sophomore pursuing a career as a physician, accompanied Collier during patient rounds. They observed how listening, eye contact and personal interaction can affect a patient’s experience.
Collier retired three years ago after working at the hospital for 23 years. He served as a cardiologist and medical director of the cardiac rehabilitation unit. He later returned as a volunteer to conduct patient rounds.
During visits, Collier focuses on speaking directly with patients before entering information into a computer. He also records details about patients’ interests, occupations and hobbies to support future conversations.
Collier introduced Ariel and Ava to former colleagues in the hospital’s catheterization and echocardiography labs. The students also observed several procedures.
Approximately 10 students have shadowed Collier during his three years as a hospital volunteer. Following the experience, Ariel said she is considering a career in cardiology.
