Gene Paul Stewart obituary 1937~2021
Gene Paul Stewart, 83, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away April 5, 2021 at his home, with family at his side.
Born September 2, 1937 at Sibley Hospital in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Paul and Phyllis (Maling) Stewart.
He graduated from Wheaton High School, Silver Spring, MD, with the Class of 1956.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force February 22, 1956 and served for 6 years, after which he was in the Reserves.
Gene worked for the D.C. Fire Department, serving 20 years before he retired as a Battalion Chief on August 31, 1980. Afterward he helped his daughter Sandra Wagner start a courier business when she graduated from college with an MBA degree. When Sandy left the Company, he became the owner/operator of Stat Courier Service, Inc. until he retired January 10, 2011 and passed his Company over to his grandson Charles “Bud“ Wagner.
After his previous marriage sadly ended, he met Katherine Deborah (Reese) Shields November of 1998 in Ocean City, MD. They fell in love and later married on October 31, 2002, in Frederick, MD.
Gene enjoyed the outdoors, whether he was skiing down a mountainside, sitting on a beach, or riding a motorcycle on the open road. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and sitting in his backyard enjoying a cold beer with his neighbor Bob.
He loved wife, his family, his home, his grandchildren and step-grandchildren, his dogs Gizmo and Bentley, and his Country. He was always ready to talk about politics and history. He had his lovingly ornery side and a great sense of humor. He also had a very kind and nurturing side. Gene will be greatly missed by the many whose lives he touched.
In addition to his wife Debby, he is survived by one daughter from his previous marriage, Sandra Wagner Jackson and her husband, Charles of Sebastian, FL, a step daughter, Katherine Shields Dammeyer and her husband, Kevin of Dunkirk, MD, a step-son, Casey B. Shields and his wife, Nicole of Harrisburg, PA, two grandchildren Charles T. Wagner of Hagerstown and Lisa Wagner Roberts and her husband Justin of Brunswick, MD; four step-grandchildren, James E. Dammeyer, Lauren Reese Dammeyer, Gregory Archer and Westlynn Greider and great-grandson Colton , four siblings: William Stewart and his wife, Vicky, of Fort Washington, MD, Nancy Fraley of West Virginia, Phyllis Dixon of Winchester, VA and Robert Stewart of Sevierville, Tennessee, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathy (age 5) and Paula Stewart (age 18).
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
