Greencastle-Antrim used four first-half touchdowns and a key special teams score in the second half to defeat Waynesboro 35-13 in the season opener Friday night at Kaley Field.
The Blue Devils took a 7-0 lead when Spencer Long broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Greencastle then capitalized on two Waynesboro fumbles during the second quarter. Landon Kagarise scored on a 27-yard run after the first turnover, and quarterback Gavin Logsdon connected with Wyatt Hull for a 20-yard touchdown following the second.
Greencastle extended its lead to 28-0 before halftime when Logsdon found Long for a 70-yard touchdown pass. Long finished with 99 rushing yards on 11 carries and added 70 receiving yards. Logsdon completed 5 of 9 passes for 109 yards with no interceptions.
Waynesboro responded in the third quarter when quarterback Nick Carbaugh scored on an 11-yard run. The Indians later moved into position for a field-goal attempt, but Wyatt Hull blocked the kick and Ethan South returned the loose ball for a touchdown, restoring Greencastle’s four-score advantage.
Greencastle coach Jason Thurston said the blocked kick shifted momentum back to the Blue Devils after Waynesboro improved its play following halftime. He also noted that Greencastle had one turnover and tackled well during the victory.
Waynesboro added its final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a pass from Carbaugh to Nathan Baker. Braden Eckert led the Greencastle defense with nine tackles, while Hull, Loki Huffman and South each recorded four.
