CHAMBERSBURG (September 23, 2019) — An Emmaus doctor biking across Pennsylvania brought his “Don’t Wait” message to Franklin County last week.

On Sept 18, 67-year old Ric Baxter, MD visited SpiriTrust Lutheran® Home Care & Hospice in Chambersburg, one of many stops on his Don’t Wait bike tour across the state.

Baxter’s stop in Chambersburg is part of an 800-mile trans-Pennsylvania solo bike trip that began and will end at St. Luke’s University Hospital Network’s (SLUHN) Hospice House in Saucon Valley.

Throughout the month of September, the SLUHN hospice and palliative medicine specialist and Emmaus resident has been visiting hospice facilities, family, friends and public institutions, many in out-of-the-way places, taking an urgent message to the people he meets along the way: Don’t Wait.

Don’t Wait, Don’t Put It Off

Dr. Baxter says don’t wait to enjoy those things you’ve been putting off.  Do them soon, or you might never achieve them.  Don’t wait to spend time with people who are important to you. Our time is limited, so delaying might mean putting something off forever. Don’t wait to seek medical care, which can keep you healthy, make you stronger or bring you comfort if you are facing a complex or terminal illness.

To people who are facing complex illnesses or their final days, Dr. Baxter advises them to request Palliative or Hospice Care, which has been shown to both prolong life and make the final days more valuable.

Dr. Baxter arrived in Chambersburg from Altoona, pedaling approximately 80 miles in one day.

SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice welcomed him with an ice cream social. There he met home care and hospice staff along with residents from SpiriTrust Lutheran®, The Village at Luther Ridge, a life plan community for older adults.

The following day Dr. Baxter presented a noon lecture about hospice and palliative care before local healthcare professionals and providers at Chambersburg Hospital.
