Hughes’ four-goal barrage highlights SU. Women’s Soccer Senior Day win over Lackawanna, 5-0

The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team defeated Lackawanna 5-0 Saturday at David See Field.

Before the match, Shippensburg recognized seniors Ashley Hughes, Kirstin Brown, Mia Kemp, Haylee Sherman and Gabrielle Walker.

Hughes opened the scoring in the 17th minute, giving the Raiders (3-6-2) a 1-0 halftime lead despite recording 12 shots on goal during the first half.

Hughes scored again in the 59th minute on an assist from Andrea Black. Less than a minute later, Black assisted Paige Marek to extend Shippensburg’s lead to 3-0.

Hughes completed her hat trick in the 83rd minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that went off the crossbar and crossed the goal line. She scored her fourth goal two minutes later on a cross from Walker.

Hughes became the first Shippensburg player to score four goals in a match since Izzy Weigel accomplished the feat on Nov. 6, 2019.

Brown, Mae Leedy and Hannah Cline shared time in goal and combined for the shutout. Lackawanna goalkeeper Sophia Arvelo made 17 saves.

Shippensburg will play at Shepherd at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
