Update on Ramp Detours on I-81 in Cumberland County

​PennDOT has issued an update on detours at the Route 174 (Exit 29) on-ramps to northbound and southbound Interstate 81 in Cumberland County. Reconstruction and widening of the ramps are currently taking place.

Detour dates have changed slightly in recent weeks due to weather delays.

The I-81 southbound ramp should reopenWednesday, April 28.A detour to the Route 233/ Newville (Exit 37) is currently in place.

The I-81 northbound ramp will close April 28and reopenWednesday, May 12.A detour to the Route 696/Fayette Street Exit 24 will be in place.

This work is part of a pavement preservation project. It includes milling, resurfacing, base repairs, concrete patching, guiderail upgrades, pavement markings, and minor bridge work on I-81 in Southampton, Shippensburg, South Newton, and Penn townships.

The work limits for this project are from the Franklin County Line in Shippensburg Township to the Kutz Road bridge in Penn Township, Cumberland County. The project will be finished by October 2022.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., is the prime contractor on this $26.48 million project.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting 511PA. The website is free and available 24 hours a day. It provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
