PSP’s Troop H Major Case Team is investigating a shooting in which an injured police officer shot and killed his assailant in Cumberland County yesterday.
The shootings happened after officers from North Middleton Township Police Department, Newville Borough Police Department, and Camp Hill Police Department went to 1 Brittney Drive in North Middleton Township to serve an arrest warrant on Roger Wayne Ellis, 54, Carlisle.
Ellis had an active arrest warrant for fleeing and eluding police as well as multiple other warrants, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.
Police went to the North Middleton Township at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to arrest Ellis. The homeowner verified Ellis was in the home, giving them permission to make entry.
Officers announced and identified themselves while attempting to hail Ellis out from the residence. Ellis refused commands to exit the home.
Instead, he produced a handgun and shot the North Middleton Township Officer at close range inside the residence.
Officers retreated from the residence and established a perimeter. Ellis exited the residence still armed with a handgun, walking toward the wounded North Middleton Township officer. The injured officer returned fire and shot Ellis. Officers rendered aid but Ellis died at the scene.
