An Adams County man who shot and killed an intruder during a home invasion early Wednesday morning is in stable condition in an area hospital. His wife, severely beaten by the the intruder, is in critical condition.
Pennsylvania State Police identified the dead intruder as Steven David Schaffer, 54. He was shot several times by the homeowner. Police described Schaffer as “possibly unstable” when he invaded the couple’s home on Green Springs Road in Berwick Township, Adams County, shortly after noon. He was wearing only a T-shirt at the time.
Police said Schaffer forced his way into the couple’s home. He then beat the man with his fists, then attacked the wife in the couple’s bedroom. The husband retrieved a handgun and shot Schaffer multiple times in an attempt to protect his wife.
The entire incident was over in just a few minutes.
Schaffer died at the scene. The couple both had injuries as a result of the attack. The husband was taken to an area hospital, where he is in stable condition. A medical helicopter air lifted his wife to a trauma center in critical condition with multiple skull fractures, according to police.
An investigation is continuing.
