Mrs. Janet B Helfrick (Johns), 93, of Afton, VA and formerly of Waynesboro, PA died Tuesday, November 22, 2022, in her home.
Born February 24, 1929 in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Rush M. and Elsie G. (Brown) Johns. She lived her early life in the Waynesboro area.
Mrs. Helfrick graduated from Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1947.
She and her husband, the late John K. Helfrick, Jr., were married on July 12, 1950, in Hagerstown, MD. They lived in Alaska for 17 years and also Germany, Japan, Arizona and Texas, as her husband was a career Army man. Mr. Helfrick died on June 12, 1984.
From 1964 until 1992, she worked in civil service with the Federal Government at Fort Richardson, Alaska, Fort Ritchie, Maryland and Heidelberg, Germany.
She was protestant by faith and while in Waynesboro attended Faith United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two children, John K. Helfrick, III and Jena K. Helfrick, both of Afton, VA; her twin sister, Jean J. Smith Bacon of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice K. Helfrick on June 9, 1952; one granddaughter, Kori R. Helfrick Williams on December 6, 1996; five sisters, Doris Thompson, Gwendolyn McBride, Gladys Gilbert, Betty Spong and Dorothy Loy; and one brother, Richard Johns.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2022 in Green Hill Cemetery, 953 S. Potomac St., Waynesboro with Pastor Alison Grove officiating.
Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is handling the arrangements.
