John E Ralston

Born September 27, 1944 in Grove City, PA, son of the late Miller A. and Lucy D. (Hancox) Ralston.

He graduated from Mercer Area High School with the class of 1963, and later earned his Associates Degree from Central Texas College.

He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. He was in the Signal Corps, working as a Telephone Central Dial Office Repairman. His career allowed him the opportunity to travel all around the world. The flag he received when he retired flew over the capital.

He and his wife of over 55 years, Andrea L. “Andy” (McNamee) Ralston, were married on December 17, 1967 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fairplay, MD. They moved to Zullinger in 1983.

He was a member of Germantown Church of God, Cascade, MD, Joe Stickell American Legion Post # 15, Waynesboro and Peter M. Rasmussen Masonic Lodge No. 916, Worms, Germany. In the early 90’s, he served as an Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop, #14, Smithsburg, MD, while his son was in the scouts and for several years after.

In addition to enjoying a meal at the Parlor House in Waynesboro, John was a huge NASCAR fan and attended many races.

He enjoyed anything automotive, including puttering around on his and his children’s vehicles. He enjoyed being outdoors and hunting at one time, although, he didn’t always get anything, he enjoyed the time he spent in the mountains. His family routinely referred to him as Yosemite Sam, and he will be remembered for his loving ornery personality.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: his son, Steven A. Ralston (Melinda), of Zullinger, PA and his daughter, Starlene D. Lassiter (Stephen), of West Point, VA; two sisters, Arlene Peters of Jackson Center, PA and Joyce Rodgers of Winter Haven, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews.
