John Peter Illo, 97, of Chambersburg, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the Shook Home in Chambersburg.
Born Saturday, April 10, 1926 in Bronx, NY, he was a son of the late Frank and Helen Allison Illo.
John served honorably in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg.
He earned his MA from Columbia University in Bronx, NY, and later went on to receive his PHD from Fordham University in New York. John retired from the Shippensburg University as an English Professor. He was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in Cleveland, OH.
John is survived by one daughter, Camille Armantrout, Pittsboro, NC; five sons, John Illo, Shippensburg, Robert Illo, Lancaster, Michael Illo, Shippensburg, James Illo, Millford, MA, and Joseph Illo, San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice L. Dunton Illo, who passed away September 26, 2021; one brother; and one sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg, with Father Joseph Illo and Father Ben Dunkelberger as Celebrants.
Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday, at the Church.
