Mrs. Joy M Grunden (Spurling), 76, of Greencastle, PA, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.
Born May 21, 1946, in Salem, MA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Spurling and Lillian (Bennichek) Thuotte.
She graduated from Pennsville Memorial High School, Pennsville, New Jersey, with the class of 1964.
She married Charles Grunden in October 1, 1998 in Hagerstown, MD. She was employed as a fraud expert, working at Citibank for 27 years.
Joy had more energy than the Energizer bunny on steroids! She was very outgoing and easily turned strangers into friends. She was a fiercely independent lady who not only knew how to care for others, but she also knew how to care for herself.
She was a great mentor to her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also to so many young girls, giving of her time to be a Girl Scout Leader for 15 years, sometimes taking charge of two troops at a time! She led her life by the girl scout law: She did her best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, she took responsibility for what she said and what she did. She respected herself and others, she respected authority, she used resources wisely, and she definitely made the world a better place!
Having a daughter, who was in the Air Force and a husband, who was an Army veteran, she felt strongly about the men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping our country safe. She was a lifetime member of the Waynesboro V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
She was a member of the Quilts of Valor, an organization that creates beautiful quilts and presents them to military veterans to thank them for their service. She and her daughter, Christine spent many hours quilting together. Joy truly embodied her name, her cheerful, beautiful spirit would show through in all that she did.
Left behind to celebrate her memory is her husband, Charles; two children: William R. Stanfield, Washington State, and Christine C. Kelliher of Greencastle; two grandchildren: Laura Wallace and her husband, AJ, of Greencastle, and Sarah Otero, and her husband, CJ, of Victor, NY; four great-grandchildren: Kandon, Aiden-Michael, Mason-James, and Emma-Jane; several half-siblings and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Kelliher.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., on Saturday, November 19, 2022 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. Greencastle.
