Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em There are Taxes

Tax Tip Tuesday

Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s a multitude of types of taxes.

There’s tax on income such as payroll tax, capital gains and estate taxes and all the derivatives of each of these income related taxes.  There’s tax on property including personal property tax and real estate taxes.  There’s tax on goods and services such as sales tax, excise tax, luxury tax, user fees and the proverbial sin tax. There are many different types of taxes under these broad categories, too.  And then road tolls are a type of tax.  Building permits are a type of tax.  The list goes on.

In 1995, Eric Patterson wrote an article for Paradigm Life and noted 97 different taxes.  It is likely that number has increased with the addition of such things as the carbon tax and internet sales tax.

Considering the various taxes you pay, it’s understandable why taxes are typically the largest life expense, making many people simply hate ‘em.  But what if there was a way to combat that – by using the tax code to your advantage??

Save money with tax avoidance

Using tax code to legally save you money is called tax avoidance.  When you do it illegally, it’s called tax evasion.

The best way to successfully avoid over-paying taxes legally is to either hire a tax professional or learn more about taxes yourself.
