Mabel E Swope Dice obituary 1925~2021


Mrs. Mabel E (Miller) Swope Dice, 96, who lived most of her life in Greencastle, PA, passed away April 6, 2021 at the home of her daughter in Waynesboro, PA, surrounded by her family.

Born February 24, 1925 in Marion, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Crider) Davis.

She attended the Chambersburg Area High School.

She married Charles R. Swope in 1943. Charles passed away December 16, 1960.

Mabel’s past work experiences include: The Knitting Mill, Waynesboro, Stanley Co., Chambersburg, PA, Sagnier Inc., McConnellsburg, PA, and Scotland School for Veteran’s Children, Chambersburg, where she enjoyed being a House Parent, until she retired. She would also periodically do house cleaning for many people in the Greencastle area.

Mabel has been an active and longtime member of the Open Door Church, Chambersburg, where she enjoyed being a greeter, welcoming everyone with her contagious smile. She was a lifetime member of the Greencastle V.F.W. Post # 15 and a life member of the Auxiliary for the Greencastle Fire Dept., She was a member of the Greencastle Lions Club, Greencastle Red Hat Society and Greencastle Homemakers.

When she wasn’t busy with her family, church and community, Mabel found time to enjoy caring for her “posey” of choice, African Violets; doing ceramics in her early years; collecting Snowbabies; wordsearches and doing jigsaw puzzles, which were later donated to the Salvation Army.

Mabel, referred to as “Nanny” by her grandchildren, was “old school”. No computers, smart phones, or the latest technology took up time in her day. She spent her time making memories with her family, friends and community. Mabel had a special way about her that made a lasting impression on the many lives she touched.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Baumgardner, and her husband John of Waynesboro; a son, Richard Swope and his significant other, Patricia Hartle of Deland, FL; four grandchildren: Todd Swope, Hagerstown, MD, Candy Weaver, Waynesboro, Angie Carmack and her husband, Jim, Chambersburg, Alex Swope and his significant other, Tara Yost, Williamsport, MD, six great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, one brother, John Davis, Jr. and his wife, Rosie of Upton, PA, one nephew and one niece.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2021 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. Greencastle, PA.

Funeral service and burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mabel E Swope Dice may be made to the Open Door Church, 600 Miller St. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
