Maryland Leads Multi-State Coalition in Lawsuit Against Uber Over Subscription Practices

Maryland Flag

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced that Maryland is leading a coalition of 22 state law enforcement agencies joining an existing Federal Trade Commission lawsuit against Uber Technologies, LLC and Uber USA, LLC. The case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, is scheduled for trial in February 2027.

The lawsuit alleges that Uber engaged in deceptive and unfair practices related to its Uber One subscription service. According to the complaint, Uber used negative-option marketing when offering free trials, resulting in automatic charges if consumers did not cancel. The suit also alleges that Uber misled consumers about savings offered through Uber One, made cancellation difficult, and charged users before their billing dates, including during active free-trial periods.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office is seeking restitution, penalties, costs, and an injunction for alleged violations of Maryland’s Consumer Protection Act and the federal Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act.

States joining Maryland in the coalition include Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Alameda County District Attorney.

Consumers with concerns about Uber One may contact the Maryland Consumer Protection Division at 410-528-8662, file a complaint at https://oag.maryland.gov/, or mail the division at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202.
